남명우 초대전

내 작업은 인간에 대한 연민, 내면의 긴장과 고독에 대한 발로이다. 비록 조형 언어는 다르지만, 마크 로스코가 표현하고자 했었던 인간의 기본 감정에 많은 공감을 한다. 비극, 황홀경, 파멸 등 변해가는 과정에서 승화된 감정이 비애를 품고 있듯 내 작업의 대부분 은 멜랑콜리아다. 

그 안에서 발현된 감정의 형태들은 얼굴이라는 기호를 통해 다듬어지고 완성된다. 얼굴은 기억을 담는 장소이자 오감이 살아 있는 곳이다. 나와 외부 세계의 경계이자 교류의 통로이며, 삶의 모든 파동이 전달되는 터이다. 에너지가 있는 모든 생명체는 근본적으로 추상이다. 그것은 개연성도, 형식도 없이 작동하는 순수한 자율성이다. 그래서 내 감정의 형태는 무규정적, 무제약적이고, 탈중심적이다. 얼굴은 모호한 암시나 불안전한 형태를 띠기 위해 세부적인 것은 생략한다. 인물의 외양을 흐리게 함으로써 생각, 인성, 의도 같은 본질적 요소를 나타내고자 했다. 아름다움보다는 추하고 서투름이 인식 너머 공명을 만든다. 나는 불확실성을 좋아하므로 순연히 인간의 감정을 표현하는 것을 추구한다.

My work is a response to human compassion, inner tension and solitude. Although my figurative language is different, I resonate with many of the basic human emotions that Mark Rothko was trying to express. Much of my work is melancholy as tragedy, ecstasy, destruction, and other emotions sublimated in the process of transformation. 

The forms of emotion expressed within me are refined and perfected through the symbol of the face. The face is a place where memories are stored and the five senses are alive. The face signifies a boundary between the self and the world outside, a channel of communication, and a place where all the waves of life are transmitted. All living things with energy are fundamentally abstract; they are pure autonomy, operating without contingency or form, thus, the form of my emotions is unstructured, unconstrained, and uncentered. The faces omit details in favor of vague suggestions and unstable shapes. By blurring the appearance of the figures, I try to show the essential elements such as thoughts, emotions, and intentions. Their ugliness and clumsiness rather than beauty create a resonance beyond recognition. I like uncertainty, so I seek to express purely human emotions.
